Former firefighters and FDNY officials celebrated the centennials of Engine Company 82 and Ladder Company 31 at a ceremony Friday at the companies' headquarters on Intervale Avenue in the South Bronx.
The firehouse sits in an area that was known for a heavy rate of fires in the late 1970s. At one point, the firehouse was recognized as one of the busiest in the world.
Things have since slowed down, but current and former firefighters agree it is an elite place to be assigned.
"People came here to do work," said FDNY Captain Brian Byrne. "With the Fire Department, we all wanted to go to a busy house. As it started to get busy, and became a great house, great guys wanted to come in here."
"You went out 10-12 times on a Friday or Saturday night," said retired firefighter Dick Carroll of Ladder 31. "And we did like 10,000 runs, 9,000 runs a year. So it was a very busy house."
Several plaques were also dedicated to fallen firefighters.
