Deutsche Standpipe Fix

NY Post

by CHUCK BENNETT

The faulty standpipe in the former Deutsche Bank building that led to the death of two firefighters three weeks ago has finally been repaired, officials announced yesterday.

The standpipe, which was supposed to send pressurized water throughout the building, was partially dismantled the day of the Aug. 18 fire that killed firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino.

The building, which is contaminated with toxic dust, was undergoing demolition. Careless smoking by a worker was blamed for the blaze.

Meanwhile, more than two weeks after higher than normal levels of the carcinogen dioxin were detected around the building, officials agreed on a plan to reseal it. Officials could still give no firm date when the resealing work will begin.
