FDNY Opening Medical Centers for 9/11 Health Problems

NY Daily News

by Jonathan Lemire

The FDNY is opening four medical centers in the region to better help active and retired firefighters battling health problems stemming from the Sept. 11 terror attacks, officials said yesterday.

The first of the centers began operation on Staten Island yesterday and will soon be followed by facilities in Fort Totten in Queens, Brentwood in Suffolk County and Middletown in upstate Orange County.

The facilities had previously only been used for counseling, meaning that firefighters had to travel to fire headquarters in downtown Brooklyn for combined mental and physical care, a FDNY spokesman said.
