Firefighter Killed In Deutsche Bank Blaze Remembered At Wake

NY 1

As the investigation into Saturday's fire at the former Deutsche Bank building in Lower Manhattan continues, family, friends and colleagues began saying goodbye to one of the two firefighters killed in the blaze.

A sea of mourners lined up at the wake of Joseph Graffagnino, 33, of Brooklyn Tuesday at the Andrew Torregrossa and Sons Funeral Home on 79th Street in Dyker Heights. The wake will continue tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta were among those in attendance.

"It's just numbing, really,'" said one mourner. "Nobody can tell how you feel and you look at them and feel terrible for them. They are a wonderful family.'"

"The one thing [Graffagnino's mother] said to me is that Joe was more than a son; he was a friend," said another. "But I don't blame God for this. I mean they are a very, very faithful family. He always had a wonderful smile. You can see, even with his daughter, always with a smile on her face. It's almost a splitting image of him."

Beddia's funeral is set for Thursday morning at Saint Ephrem's Church on the Bay Ridge Parkway in Brooklyn.

Viewing hours for Robert Beddia of Staten Island will be held at Harmon Funeral Home on Forest Avenue in West New Brighton tomorrow and Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday morning at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan.

The Beddia Family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the: Firefighter Joseph Graffagnino Children's Fund
c/o FDNY Foundation
9 Metrotech Center

Both firefighters worked at Manhattan's Ladder 5 Engine 24 Battalion 2 – a firehouse that lost 11 members at the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.
