Historic FDNY Appointment

NY Post

by DAN KADISON

A 40-year-old FDNY veteran yesterday was named the first Asian-American fire marshal in the department's history.

David Wong, of Chinese descent, was one of 42 firefighters to receive promotions - including 24 who were made fire marshals - during a ceremony at the Fire Training Academy on Randalls Island.

Wong said he was stunned when Chief Fire Marshal Louis Garcia informed him he was the first Asian-American to become a fire marshal - a job that's been around since 1854.

"I thought he was pulling my leg," said Wong, who worked at Ladder 6 in Chinatown and was a cop for five years.

Wong said he hopes his promotion inspires more Asians to join the FDNY.
