An elderly man is suffering from severe burns after flames engulfed his Staten Island home Tuesday.
Firefighters raced to extinguish the fire that raged on the first floor of Louis Femenella’s Great Kills house. Femenella, who has trouble walking, was trapped inside the house, but firefighters managed to pull him from the flames.
Neighbors tried to rescue the 93-year-old by breaking through the window, but waited for the fire department to do the heavy-duty work.
"We tried our best until the fire department came here. They did a great job. They came in under five minutes and they just took everything over. Went right in."
Femenella is in critical condition at Staten Island University North Hospital.
