(Bedford Park-WABC) — A deadly fire swept through a three-story building Monday morning in the Bronx killing one person and injuring at least six firefighters.

Around 6:30 a.m., fire marshals were sifting through the wreckage at 2819 Decatur Avenue and they were just trying to figure out how this fire started.

A male tenant in his 50's who lived on the second floor was killed. But the death toll could have been even higher if it was not for the quick thinking of a neighbor who smelled smoke and ran in for help.

Over 60 firefighters responded to the fire around 1:30 a.m. this morning in Bedford Park. Six of those firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze and were taken to Jacobi Medical Center.

The fire was first reported by a former tenant who still lives in the neighborhood. She says she banged on her former landlord's door to get him and his brother out with minor injuries. But there was nothing anyone could do to save their tenant.

Veronica Agront, Tenant: "I said break the door down do something to get him out of there! Because I saw the old man's arm sticking out of the window and he couldn't get out."

The home's two surviving residents are at a local shelter this morning. Everything inside of their house was destroyed.
