(New York-WABC)— A massive four-alarm fire burned through a commercial strip of five businesses in the Woodside section of Queens, sending firefighters running for their lives when the roof of the structure collapsed.

According to fire officials, the blaze erupted in the one-story building at 39-39 63rd Street just after 11 p.m., shooting flames through the roof. Firefighters rushed in to battle the blaze, but declared a "Mayday" when the roof of the structure began to collapse around them.

Fortuanately all firefighters escaped the collapsing building to safety, and battled the fire from the outside for the rest of the night.

At least seven firefighters were treated for various injuries, including heat exhaustion. One resident of a neighboring home was treated for extreme some inhalation when the acrid smoke spread through the neighborhood.

In all, five businesses went up in flames. Some of them contained flammable materials, fanning the fire.
