(Boerum Hill-WABC, July 9, 2004) Three people were critically injured in an early morning fire in Brooklyn. It happened in a high-rise building in Boerum Hill. The fire happened at Nevin Street at a building right at Warren. Around 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning, the fire marshal was on the scene and he was very busy coming in and out of the building. He was trying to pinpoint the cause of this fire. It started on the seventh floor in apartment 7D. It appears flames began inside the living room. There were four men inside that apartment. When firefighters arrived they found two of the victims unconscious in the kitchen. A third person was also knocked out and he was in the hallway. However, a fourth person was able to get out although he did take in some smoke. Crews did pull the three men to safety and they were rushed to the hospital. The fire happened at a 21-story high rise with many apartments but the battalion chief said that one key factor kept this fire from spreading to other units. Michael Rowley, FDNY: "Generally a fire-proof building is a concrete building and there are generally no extensions to the floor above or to the adjacent apartments. The floors and ceilings are concrete." Because the building is fire-proof, no one had to be evacuated. This morning, people were still inside their homes except for those three men who were rushed to the hospital. They have second and third degree burns. They are in critical condition. Their ages are 58, 76 and 27. There is an on-going investigation into this fire.
