(Woodhaven-WABC) — More than a dozen firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze. And that's not all, a cache of weapons was discovered inside the home.

Half a dozen families were burned out of their apartments, and there are a number of troubling questions. What started this fire? Why did it spread so quickly? And what was one man doing with so many weapons? The aftermath was still smoldering when fire marshals made the discovery: two rifles, two handguns, and ammunition. How it started was not immediately clear, and arson investigators labeled the fire suspicious.

Lori Edwards, Fire Victim: "I mean, we all have kids on this block, and they pulled out weapons from the house...rifles, shotguns...and it's scary. It's just really scary."

The fire broke out at 9:30 p.m. and spread quickly across half a dozen row houses. Two were destroyed, the others badly damaged.

The fire apparently started in 9210 91st Avenue where neighbors say the weapons were later discovered. Through it all, 17 firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, but no one else was injured. For dozens of residents, it was a close call.

No arrests in this case at least not so far. As we said before, this fire has been labeled suspicious. It has not yet been ruled arson. The nearest firehouse is Engine Company 293. It was slated to be closed and neighbors waged a valiant fight to keep it open. They say this fire could have been much worse.
