A father and son were both hurt yesterday when a midtown sidewalk collapsed beneath them as they jackhammered the concrete, authorities and co-workers said.
Jose Dutan and his son, Santiago, tumbled nearly 10 feet into a pit when the slab of concrete they were working on collapsed around 1:30 p.m., a co-worker said.
"They went down with the concrete slab," said Deputy Fire Battalion Chief John Joyce. "They rode it down into the hole."
The Ecuadoran immigrants were trapped for about 20 minutes as co-workers called for help and firefighters tried to free them.
"It was a little-complicated operation, but we got them out," said Joyce.
Firefighters brought the younger worker out first, then plucked his dad to safety a few minutes later. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
The construction crew had been doing work on W.36th St. for about a week. There was no sign of any trouble until the sidewalk suddenly gave way.
There was no word on what caused the collapse.
"They just went right down into the hole," said Saba Sheikh, who works in a deli on the block. "It was scary."
