New York -WABC, March 17, 2005) — Authorities say a man killed members of his family, then set a high rise fire to cover it up.

Police say 44-year-old Bao Zhang used a pellet gun and knife to kill his 19-year-old son and 27-year-old niece. The man then allegedly wounded his 43-year-old wife and 29-year-old nephew.

Police say then he set a fire, and caused the explosion that took his own life.

It all happened on the top floor of the 21-story Masaryk Towers on the Lower East Side on Wednesday. Firefighters found that floor in flames when they arrived around 8:00pm.

Dep. Chief Richard Fuerch, FDNY: "There was fire coming out of the top floor windows. We had reports of an explosion upstairs. As it turns out, it was a difficult stretch- companies had to go down a long hallway in the apartment. A large volume of fire -- it took quite awhile to put it out."

Seventeen firefighters were hurt battling the fire. Three went to a burn unit. Hundreds of tenants in the building were evacauted until about 11:00pm.
