NEW YORK - Seventeen families in Astoria, Queens are cleaning up their basements and homes after a water main break sent a flood of water through the streets. The 20-inch main broke at 70th Street and Ditmars Boulevard around 4:30 p-m yesterday. The main was shut off about two-and-a-half hours later.

Firefighters had to rescue pets and children from some of the 17 homes that were evacuated because of the gushing water. The water forced police to close down a four-block area of Astoria.

At least six of the homes remain uninhabitable this morning.

The city is looking into a report that a contractor broke the water main while working in the area.
