FDNY To Get New Safety Equipment

NEW YORK -- Every New York City firefighter will soon be getting new life saving equipment in addition to lightweight safety ropes.

The FDNY is developing a new personal safety system that will include a harnesses so firefighters can slide down the ropes if they need to get out of a burning building fast.

The change in policy comes weeks after six firefighters jumped from a burning building and two of them died.

The firefighters union has been critical of the department for eliminating the safety ropes in 2000.

The new gear could be tested and evaluated within weeks and potentially in use within months.
