Suspicious Fire Critically Injures Family Of Five

NY 1

A family of five is hospitalized in critical condition after a suspicious fire spread through their apartment building in Brooklyn early Monday morning.

The flames started in a second-floor stairwell in the building on Classon Avenue in Crown Heights and quickly spread to the roof, officials said.

“Nobody could get out the building from the second floor or up,” said Jean Heriveaux, whose sister was one of the victims.”My sister’s apartment was the only one that got really damaged, and they were the only people hurt.”

The injured family members were evacuated by firefighters. They are now listed in critical condition.

“The guys did a great job getting up there,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Vincent Mandala. “They got in through the fire escape to get these people out.”
