Dozens of Brooklyn residents are homeless after a raging fire gutted part of their Crown Heights apartment building Sunday. The blaze broke out just before 10 a.m. The flames tore through an entire floor of the four-story building before firefighters were able to put it out after two hours. "It was tough because we had such a large amount of fire throughout the area above the ceiling and below the roof level, involving the entire building, which was some 12 apartments on the entire top floor," said assistant fire chief James Esposito. "So we quickly had to stretch hand-lines in all areas of the building, we had to force doors where occupants weren't at home, and we had to access other apartments by fire escapes and area ladders. So by and large it was a tough operation." No injuries were reported, but more than 50 people were evacuated from the top floor alone. Many apartments sustained serious water damage, and it may be days before residents are allowed back into their homes. The Red Cross is helping displaced resident find places to stay.
