The Fire Department is teaming up with the New York Blood Center to support the center's "Precise Match" program.
The program encourages minority groups to donate blood to make sure there is a diverse supply. A more diverse supply allows people with diseases like sickle cell anemia and leukemia to get blood with matching antigens.
Those antigens are inherited, and matches are more likely to be found among families and related ethnic groups.
