Firefighters Say Radio Frequency Giveaway Will Hinder Emergency Responses

NY 1

A tentative plan to give away radio frequencies has some firefighters concerned about how it will affect their ability to communicate with police during an emergency.

Currently, public safety communications systems and Nextel's wireless services use the same spectrum bands. The overlap causes "dead spots" near Nextel cellular towers, making the radios useless to emergency personnel.

The Federal Communications Commission is considering moving Nextel’s frequencies out of this spectrum. However, Nextel wants to auction off the frequency space to another user without keeping some bands exclusive for emergency radios.

A group of retired firefighters and communication experts charge the plan would make it too difficult for police and firefighters to coordinate emergency communications.

The First Response Coalition wants the FCC to form an advisory board and make sure first responders can talk to each other on the same radios.
