Fire At Queens Keyspan Plant Treated As A Hazmat Situation

NY 1

Firefighters allowed a blaze at the Keyspan Energy plant in Queens to burn itself out Monday.

The company says a piece of equipment known as a heat exchanger caught fire as employees were cutting it up for scrap metal just after 10:00 this morning.

After several failed attempts to extinguish the blaze, Fire Department officials decided just to let it burn.

No one was injured in the fire. However, the FDNY is treating the blaze as a hazmat situation, amid concerns some chemicals may be involved.
