Firefighters pulled off a spectacular rescue in the Bronx Saturday, rappelling down a burning building and lowering two people two safety.

The fire began at about 7 p.m. on the top floor of a building on Bruckner Boulevard. The flames were too intense to reach the trapped residents from below, so firefighters performed the “rooftop rescue.” One firefighter said its so rare, he's only seen it done twice in 25 years on the job.

“This one was two simultaneous and adjoining windows within ten feet of each other,” said FDNY Lieutenant Kevin Williams. “I've never seen that or heard of that before, but the members all gelled together and we pulled it off.”

About 70 firefighters in all responded to the fire. Five civilians and nine firefighters were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
