The Fire Department blessed its fleet of five ships in an annual ceremony at Pier 17 in Manhattan Tuesday.

The fleet played a major role in the rescue effort after the World Trade Center attack. The boats were used to evacuate people from Lower Manhattan.

“The Marine Division has been around a long time,” said FDNY Chaplain John Delendick, who led the ceremony. “People don't see them that often, but they do an awful lot of work. They pump water when we need water on the land. They put out ship fires, pier fires. They rescue people who fall off boats.”

This was the third annual blessing of the FDNY fleet.
