Firefighters Object To New Emergency Protocols

The Firefighters Union says the Police Department is being given too much authority in the city's new emergency protocols.

In a statement, the Uniformed Firefighters Association says the NYPD has too much control in areas like hazardous materials incidents.

The UFA says the lack of authority given to firefighters, points to a serious lack of leadership in the department.

The union says, "Based upon the outcome of the incident command system, there is no choice but to question if the FDNY even sent a representative to the negotiations or merely assigned their proxy to others."

On his radio show yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg downplayed the rivalry between the police and fire departments.

Bloomberg says the departments are getting along well since the new protocols went into effect over a week ago and confrontations between police officers and firefighters are so rare that they're barely worthy of comment.
