With much fanfare, Engine 43 in the Bronx celebrated its 100th anniversary Thursday.

Community leaders, politicians and firefighters gathered to celebrate the birthday of "The Sedgwick Slashers.” Engine 43 got the name back in the 1970’s, when arsonists set the Bronx ablaze and firefighters with the engine company battled a record number of fires.

Engine 43 shares a firehouse on Sedgwick Avenue with Ladder Company 59. The two companies cover the Bronx neighborhoods of University Heights and Morris Heights.

Public officials and fire chiefs from around the city praised Engine 43 today for its history and bravery.

“The New York City Fire Department has the very richest past, and of course you are very much a part, an indivisible part, of that history,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

“I take my hat off to you, to anybody that chooses to take that journey and make that walk as a career,” said Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion. “Thank you for your service to our free society, and for continuing to keep us safe and sound.”

Scoppetta also presented the company with a plaque commemorating 100 years of service.
