A new study released Monday shows first responders to the World Trade Center collapse were the hardest hit with respiratory ailments. Researchers from New York and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention screened 362 firefighters. Results showed those present in the first 48 hours reported 32 percent greater respiratory symptoms than firefighters who were at the site three to seven days after the attacks. Symptoms included eye irritation, sore throat, daily cough, and nasal congestion. “I think this study advances what we've been learning about the WTC disaster in terms of people who got there the earliest or were there right at the occasion. They seemed to have the most symptoms and the most decline in their lung function,” said Dr. Graham Barr of Columbia University. The study appears in the April issue of the American College of Chest Physicians.
