The Heroes Fund honored some of New York's fallen firefighters at a ceremony in Manhattan Wednesday. FDNY Lieutenants Curtis Meyran and John Bellew, who were killed in a blaze in the Bronx on January 23rd, and Firefighter Richard T. Sclafani, who died in a fire in Brooklyn later the same day, were among those honored. Firefighters Joseph DiBernardo and Jeffrey Cool both spent weeks in the hospital after being injured, but they were able to attend the ceremony. “This is a bittersweet day,” said Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy. “It reminds us firefighters what’s great about the New York City Fire Department - that we really are a family, and that we look out for each other in a way that is probably unprecedented.” New York Post publisher Lachlan Murdoch presented a check to the firefighters’ families from the Heroes Fund for more than $542,000.
