The Fire Department implemented a new safety plan for using ropes Monday in response to a fatal fire back in January. Two firefighters were killed and four others were seriously injured when they were forced to jump from the fourth floor of a burning building in the Bronx. Under the revised plan, a firefighter from each of the first two ladder companies to arrive at a fire must go to the roof or to the floor above the fire with a heavy rope and secure it to a chimney or other solid structure. From there, they'll monitor whether a rescue needs to be made. The department is in the process of selecting new personal safety ropes for firefighters to carry. The FDNY stopped using the ropes in the late 1990s because they were considered too bulky and heavy, but the firefighters’ union says the equipment may have saved the lives of the firefighters in January’s blaze.
