The FDNY said Thursday it will appeal a court ruling in its battle with the firefighters’ union over reduced staffing levels. The Fire Department reduced manpower at 49 engine companies from five to four in December, exercising a contract option allowing the move when sick leave rises. The Uniformed Firefighters Association calls the reduction a threat to public and firefighter safety, and it wants a judge to decide the appropriate level of staffing. While there's been no ruling yet on the issue, a Brooklyn judge has ruled the FDNY cannot reduce staffing while the matter is in litigation. However, the Brooklyn judge’s ruling has no immediate impact because the fifth man was reinstated earlier this month, after medical leave numbers dropped.
