A large crowd of road racers is scheduled to compete next Sunday at the third annual Jeff's Run, a 5K race that starts and ends at the Mt. Loretto grounds. Post time is 10 a.m. The race honors the memory of Jeff Giordano, a highly decorated New York City firefighter who perished in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. All race proceeds will go to the Firefighter Jeff Giordano Children's Playroom at the Cornell Burn Center. Last year, more than 400 runners competed in the race, in which runners race along an out-and-back course which seems easy, but features several gradual inclines. In addition, the only major hill on the course comes at the finish, where runners must summon the strength to climb a quarter-mile incline to the finish. Jeff Benjamin and T.J. Byrnes have been past male winners, while AnneMarie Ruta and Mary Curran have taken the women's division. Fine prizes await the overall male and female winners and the top three in ten-year age categories. Additional prizes go to leading firefighter finishers, Clydesdales and Athenas. Pre-race registration will take place at the Lions Den, 17 Page Avenue, on Thursday, from 7 to 10 p.m. with a pre-race entry fee at $15. All pre-entrants will receive a race T-shirt. Runners may also post-enter at Mt. Loretto on race day, but the entry fee is $20. There's also plenty to do for the kids, with a free kids' run being held, followed by games, face-painting, and plenty of food and drink.
