Another inferno hits the Bronx

Newsday

A large fire that damaged a row of stores and led to the evacuation of an apartment building in the Bronx yesterday morning was the third blaze along the strip in the past three months, Fire Department officials said.

Fire marshals were investigating whether the incidents were linked.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the fire at 1364 Jerome Ave. at 170th Street, which broke out at 7:48 a.m. and quickly spread to neighboring stores, said department spokesman Charles Markey.

More than 200 firefighters with 50 pieces of fire equipment responded to the scene.

Markey said one apartment building behind the stores was heavily affected by smoke and evacuated. Another apartment building was somewhat affected by smoke but not evacuated.

The blaze went to a sixth alarm at 8:36 a.m., and was brought under control at 9:21 a.m. Its cause was not immediately known, but fire officials called it "suspicious."

NYC Transit said No. 4 trains along Jerome Avenue were stopped between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and Woodlawn Avenue for about 30 minutes. Service resumed by 8:30 a.m. but trains bypassed the 170th Street station until 9:30 a.m.

The two earlier fires along the commercial strip remain under investigation. The Fire Department described those fires as "substantial."
