Fire sparks Penn Station evacuation

Newsday

A fire in an equipment room spread smoke through parts of Pennsylvania Station, shut down commuter rail tracks and forced an evacuation last night, the Fire Department said.

Hundreds of people were chased from the busy midtown Manhattan transit hub by the smoke, and two minor injuries were reported.

Dozens of fire trucks stood outside, and helicopters hovered overhead.

The fire was reported about 7:40 p.m. between tracks 7 and 8, Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell said. The station was evacuated shortly after, and train service was halted.

The station has several tracks for Amtrak, NJ Transit, Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road trains.

The fire was contained in the equipment room but was still burning after 9 p.m., Fire Department Deputy Chief John Norman said.

The blaze was being treated with chemicals while firefighters waited for the rail companies to turn off the power in the room, he said.

One firefighter suffered an eye injury, and a railroad employee was suffering from smoke inhalation, the deputy chief said.

No cause of the fire had been identified.
