FDNY: Woman set fires, leapt to death

Newsday

A Brooklyn woman barricaded herself inside her apartment yesterday, lit two fires, and then threw herself from her 17th-floor window, Fire Department sources said.

"She was alone in the apartment," a Fire Department source said. "The door was locked from the inside, and a couch was pushed against the door."

Initially, the Fire Department received a 911 emergency call for a jumper at 2816 W. Eighth St. in Coney Island, one of five buildings that make up the Luna Park development. But when paramedics arrived at 1:15 p.m., they saw smoke billowing from an apartment and called for firefighters.

By the time firefighters got close to the apartment, the woman, who was middle-aged, had already fallen to her death. It took an hour to get the blaze under control. Investigators found the fires had been started on mattresses in two separate bedrooms, the source said.

The victim's next-door neighbor said she was alerted to the fire by a Key Food delivery man. She said she didn't know the victim well, but that she appeared content.

"She was a very good woman," said the neighbor, who identified herself only as Lana. "I couldn't believe this happened. I saw her a week ago. Everything is fine. She was very smart. She had a good job. She loved her son. She had everything."
