Firefighters union head re-elected

Newsday

by William Murphy

The president and most leaders of the firefighters union were re-elected yesterday despite discontent among the rank and file, who have been working for more than two years without a new contract.

Stephen Cassidy was elected to his second term as president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, defeating recent retiree Tom DaParama, 3,668 votes to 3,008. About 75 percent of the 8,774 union members voted for new terms that begin Aug. 1.

Philip McArdle, the union's sergeant-at-arms who is also the health and safety officer, was narrowly defeated by William Romaka, a Brooklyn union delegate.

All other incumbent members of the 10-member board had no opposition or were re-elected, except the Manhattan trustee position, which is becoming vacant and was won by Daniel Murphy.

Three found dead in suspicious fire

NEW YORK – AP - Three people were found dead Tuesday in a burning home in Brooklyn, fire and police officials said.

The cause of the fire in the Wingate section of Brooklyn is under investigation, but police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Farrell said the circumstances surrounding the fire were suspicious.

A man and a woman were found dead upstairs and a third person was found in the basement, Farrell said. Further details about the victims were not available.

Two others, a man and a woman, were taken from the same house on Midwood Avenue to a hospital with stab wounds, Farrell said. It was not clear how they escaped the fire.

Fire marshals are investigating the blaze and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

Seven firefighters were injured, five from heat exhaustion and two with minor injuries, said Fire Department spokesman Charles Mackey .

The fire burned from 3 a.m. until about 4:45 a.m.
