NEW YORK -- Two children were killed when a fire broke out in a public housing project in the Bronx early Saturday, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to 1216 Burke Ave. at about 2:19 a.m., according to Firefighter Paul Iannizzotto, a fire department spokesman. The blaze broke out on the second floor of the seven-story building, he said.

Police said the victims were two boys, aged 5 and 12.

The building is part of the 10-building Eastchester Gardens complex in the north Bronx.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
