A fire broke out on the 20th floor of the Municipal Building downtown yesterday, injuring seven firefighters, an FDNY official said.

The blaze engulfed the office of the Department of Real Estate Services at 1 Centre St. sometime before 5:30 p.m., the official said. It was under control by 6:38 p.m., the official said.

The firefighters were treated for minor injuries at area hospitals.

"It must have been burning for a while," said a firefighter from Tower Ladder 1, who helped put out the blaze. "There was quite a lot of heat up there."

Officials said there were only maintenance workers in the building when the fire began.

Marshals were investigating the cause of the suspicious blaze last night.
