STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The FDNY reported multiple minor injuries after a hazmat incident at the Oakwood Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency personnel initially responded to the scene at around 2:10 p.m. for reports of a contamination incident, a spokeswoman for the FDNY said.
Seven people were treated for minor injuries. The incident was placed under control by 2:53 p.m., and personnel were investigating for further exposure, the spokeswoman said.
A spokesman for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, which operates the facility, said there was a “small chemical reaction in the laboratory,” and that six people were taken to the hospital with no interruption to plant operations.
