Firefighter Seriously Injured Battling Bronx Blaze: FDNY

WNBC 4 - October 15, 2018

A firefighter was seriously injured Sunday while putting out a blaze inside a Bronx apartment where officials say there was a marijuana grow house, the FDNY says. The injured firefighter fell off an extension ladder after the fire broke out on the top floor of a three-story building on Mayflower Avenue in the Pelham Bay neighborhood, the FDNY said. It was under control by 9 p.m.

The firefighter, who hasn't been identified, suffered back and leg injuries and has 12 years on the job. He fell 30 feet to the ground after falling from the ladder. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital to be treated and is in serious, but stable condition.

Another firefighter was also injured in the blaze, however, their injuries are said to be minor.

The NYPD is investigating the marijuana grow house in the building. There was no immediate word on what may have sparked the blaze. Early Monday, investigators were in the process of putting together warrants as part of the investigation, but no arrests have been made.

Back in 2016, FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy was killed when a suspected drug den exploded in the Bronx.
