QUEENS — The axle of an LIRR train carrying hundreds of passengers derailed Wednesday, causing delays, cancelations and at least one line to be suspended, according to the transit agency.

Delays and cancellations are being reported on the Babylon, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches as a result of the derailment.

About 400 to 500 people were aboard the train when its axle derailed west of Woodside at about 12:45 p.m., officials said. All passengers were moved to a second train by 1:30 p.m.

Fire officials responded to the scene.
