STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Nearly two dozen Fire Department units responded to a house fire in Eltingville Saturday evening.
At approximately 5:12 p.m. firefighters were called to 87 Hales Ave. for a fire in the home's basement, according to FDNY spokesman.
More than 60 firefighters could be seen near the intersection of Hales and Shirley avenues, where smoke was spotted billowing from the two-story home.
Units entered the home through a second-story window, while other firefighters could be seen clearing debris from the side of the house.
The fire was placed under control by 6:04 p.m., he said.
According to the spokesman, a preliminary investigation determined the fire ignited in the home's basement amid heavy clutter.
It remains unclear if the homeowners were present during the blaze.
While one individual appeared to be treated on scene by EMS workers, no injuries or transports to local hospitals were reported, said the spokesman.
