5th Firefighter Staffing Reduced Citywide
Today the FDNY notified the UFA that they would once again remove the fifth man from all Group 2 Engines throughout the five boroughs effective Friday, July 6, at 0900 hours.
As of June 30, 2018, the absentee rate was at 7.5053% and has been trending down. The City removed the fifth man last December only to subsequently reinstate it weeks later, stating "Needs of The Department." They then reduced staffing again in March.
We feel this is once again a dangerous choice by The Department, given the current heat wave and the fact that the FDNY is on pace to shatter last year's run record. The constant removal and reinstatement of the fifth man endangers not only firefighters, but the residents of New York City.
Once again, this is a dangerous job, injuries are unpredictable, and for the most part, unavoidable. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
