Supreme Court Janus Decision

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 this morning on Janus v. AFSCME that non-union workers cannot be forced to pay fees to public sector unions. The case concerns whether public employees can be forced to pay so-called "agency fees" to fund the work of public sector unions. The court ruled that government workers who choose not to join unions may not be required to help pay for collective bargaining.

While today’s ruling may ignore the value of unions to hardworking families, the UFA will never stop organizing to protect the health, safety and interests of New York City Firefighters and the citizens they keep out of harm’s way. We stand with our fellow brothers and sisters in labor and will always fight for the rights of our members.

The full scope of the ruling will be worked out in the coming days as each state’s laws are uniquely effected. We will continue to keep you updated as more details become available.
