STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A massive three-alarm fire ripped through a commercial block in St. George Wednesday evening.

No injuries were reported in the blaze that broke out at 97 Stuyvesant Place around 5:15 p.m., a spokesman for the FDNY said.

The fire was officially place under control at 7:09 p.m., the spokesman said.

Extensive damage was done to many of the stores on the commercial block right near the 120th Precinct on Richmond Terrace.

The fire caused significant damage to the Dunkin Donunts and the pharmacy on the block. Much of the FDNY's effort was focused on those two stores.

Al Gentile, who owns the St. George Pharmacy, said the fire started in a yard behind the stores, and quickly spread.

He's worried the destruction of his business that's served the community for nearly 35 years will have an impact on the community.

"Hopefully we'll be up and running prescription-wise," Gentile said. "I don't know about the rest of the stuff. We might have to bring a trailer in and work out of there just to get the people their medication. That's my biggest concern."

Residents of an apartment complex across the street said they rely on the store.

"I don't know how long it'll take him to get the place together, but we'll have to go and find another pharmacy to do my business," Frank Cavallaro said. "I have a relationship with the pharmacist, so I feel bad."

James Torres said he could smell the smoke from his building, but did not see any of the fire.
