5th Firefighter Staffing Reduced Citywide
Today the FDNY announced that the City would once again remove the fifth man from all Group 2 Engines throughout the five boroughs effective Monday, March 12th at 0900 hours.
The absentee rate since December has been above 7.50%, and as high as 7.58%. The City removed it last December only to subsequently reinstate it weeks later, stating “Needs of the Department.” The absentee rate is currently down to 7.55%, as most recently reported to the UFA. Members suffering WTC related illnesses and members out with the flu (declared an epidemic by the CDC) have not been subtracted from the absentee rate.
With over an 11% increase in the amount of runs in the first two months of the year, the FDNY is on pace to shatter last year’s run record by 70,000 more runs. The constant removal and reinstatement of the fifth man endangers not only firefighters, but the residents of New York City.
Once again, this is a dangerous job, injuries are unpredictable and, for the most part, unavoidable. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
