STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The FDNY managed to save two cats, but several others died after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a residence in Midland Beach Friday afternoon.

The occupants of 182 Moreland St. were not home when the fire broke out just after 1 p.m., according to FDNY Battalion Chief Bill Simpson.

A neighbor reported the blaze and about 30 firefighters responded to the scene.

The fire was extinguished, and responders tried to save as many of the owner's six cats as they could.

"Two of them were found alive," Simpson said. "EMS is giving them oxygen, so they are probably going to make it."

Several of the cats were found dead. One was still missing, Simpson said.

While the cause of the blaze is not known at this time, the fire does not appear to initially be suspicious, according to Simpson.

The home owner declined to speak to the Advance.
