STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- A half-dozen homes have been evacuated in Midland Beach as crews respond to a confirmed gas leak.
At least a dozen firefighters, emergency medical personnel and National Grid workers responded to 291 Colony Avenue at about 12:38 p.m. on Sunday, and remained on scene at 3:45 p.m., according to an FDNY spokeswoman.
The house where the leak was reported was vacant, and no injuries were reported. However, six homes were evacuated as National Grid worked to shut off a gas line on Colony Avenue, according to FDNY Batallion 21 Chief Bill Simpson.
Residents likely will not be able to return to their homes until "well over an hour," as the timing will depend on whether pipes are frozen, thus making it more difficult to shut off the gas, Simpson said.
