More than 100 firefighters battled the flames that erupted on Nagle Ave. near Thayer St. just after 10 a.m., according to the FDNY. Clouds of heavy black smoke rose from the blaze that spread to seven one-story businesses, which included a barber shop, a small market and a dry cleaner.

More than two hours later, the FDNY units were still working from ladder trucks to control the fire in the mom-and-pop stores.

"It looks like they were probably fully destroyed," Assistant Chief James Hodgens said at the scene.

Hodgens said firefighters arrived within three minutes of getting the first call, which came from a Chinese restaurant in the row.

"We put water on the fire immediately," he said. "The guys did a great job."

Four firefighters went to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center with minor injuries. No civilians were reported injured.

FDNY Fire Marshals continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
