Officials said the fire erupted around 2:15 p.m. on the top floor of a building near Watson and Evergreen Avenues in Soundview.

It quickly grew in the three-story building, necessitating about 200 responding firefighters.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the fire department said the blaze was under control.

Fire officials said two firefighters suffered minor injuries because of blaze, and no residents were hurt.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the building's top floor was heavily damaged, and that water damaged some of the apartments below it.

The city buildings department is determining which parts of the building people can move back in to, Nigro said.

Officials had advised people in the area to close their windows to avoid inhaling any smoke, and to expect traffic delays.

Friday, the FDNY said it put out a two-alarm fire on the third floor and attic of the same building.
