MOUNT HOPE, Bronx (WABC) -- Firefighters battled a five-alarm fire Wednesday morning at an apartment building in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx.

The fire started on the sixth floor of the building on Walton Avenue just after 6:30 a.m.

"They found a heavy fire condition in the area between the top floor and the roof, which we know as the cockloft, that's an area in this type of building where fire spreads rather quickly," said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. "It did in this case. multiple handlines were used.".

He said the fire was limited to the top floor.

No one was in the apartment at the time. Three firefighters were injured.

Authorities say a number of families have been displaced.

Many streets in the area are blocked off with fire trucks.
