OZONE PARK, Queens (WABC) -- A man was killed in a fire that broke out early Sunday in a Queens home.

The initial call was received at 2:36 a.m. in the multi-family home on 97th Avenue in Ozone Park.

Police have identified the victim as 68-year-old Mohinvei Singh.

He was the landlord of the building and lived in the basement, which is where the fire started.

Dozens of firefighters responded and had the blaze under control in a little over an hour.

Two young women on the first floor said they were awakened by smoke pouring into their room.

"I was sleeping, she woke me up, it was all smoky so we just rushed downstairs," said resident Harish Kumari. "I didn't know what to do so I just put my flip flops on and came out."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
