Upper West Side Manhole Fire Causes Power Outage

NY Daily News - July 14, 2017

A fire erupted from Con Edison manholes on the Upper West Side Thursday causing multiple buildings near 72nd St. and Broadway to lose power.

Smoke started rising from the manholes at about 5 p.m. and continued for more than six hours, NBC reported.

FDNY officials said an underground electrical cable caused the fire.

Thursday’s heat may also have played a part in the blaze.

The fire broke out on the 40th anniversary of the city-wide 1977 blackout.

No injuries or damages were reported.
