Firefighters Union Endorses Borelli for Re-Election

SILive - July 08, 2017

CITY HALL -- The firefighters union endorsed Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) for re-election on Friday.

Borelli said he looks forward to working with the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) after the union's executive board endorsed him.

There are more than 2,000 UFA members who live on Staten Island, with some 650 firefighters assigned to the borough.

"Last weekend, I witnessed nearly all of the FDNY companies in my council district battling a blaze just a few hundred feet from my own house," Borelli said in a statement. "Seeing the work the FDNY performed to make sure all got out safely was a very real reminder of how important it is to maintain our world class fire department."

Borelli's campaign said he is advocating a new FDNY squad company on Staten Island.

"Councilman Borelli has been a strong advocate for the men and women of the FDNY since taking office," Eric Bischoff, the union's Staten Island trustee, said in a statement. "He has been with us in every attempt to make the work of firefighters safer and to expand out capabilities to reduce the number of fire-related deaths on the Island."

Borelli is running against Democrat Dylan Schwartz.
